Seven beliefs, checked
Each of these is something a reader has reasonably concluded from something an operator, a forum or a headline said. Each is checked against the mechanism, and none of the seven is a criticism of any operator.
"My balance is sitting in a bank account in my own name." It is not. Customer money normally sits in an account in the operator's name, held for customers collectively, and your name appears only in the operator's own ledger. A separate account is not a personal account.
"The regulator insures my money." Regulators supervise the operator; they do not underwrite balances and are not a compensation scheme. Where a compensation arrangement exists it is a separate body with its own limits and its own conditions, and it is never the licence itself.
"A licence means my money is protected." A licence means the operator is allowed to trade and supervised while it does. Protection comes from the specific condition attached to that licence - and a licence can carry no funds condition at all, which is exactly why the condition is what a reader must find.
"If the operator fails, my bank will refund me." A card chargeback is a dispute with a payment route about a transaction, not a claim on a customer-fund pool, and it generally does not cover a balance you chose to leave on deposit. The two mechanisms do not back each other up.
"Segregated means I get everything back." Segregation keeps customer money apart from the operator's own, which is real protection against the money being spent. It says nothing about how much is in the account, so a segregated pool can still be short - the word describes a container, not a quantity.
"My crypto balance is safe because it is on-chain." The asset on the chain is the operator's, whatever the screen shows. Your entry is an internal ledger obligation, and the fact that the operator can see a blockchain does not make the balance yours in a failure.
"The bonus sitting in my balance is my money." Usually it is not, until the wagering conditions are met. Terms commonly make bonus-derived funds conditional, exclude them from customer-money treatment and permit their removal - which is why the wagering section is also the funds section.
Why these beliefs are so persistent
- The words are the same in every regime. "Segregated" appears in a rule that requires a top-up duty and in a rule that requires nothing, so a reader who has learned the word has learned nothing about which one they are under.
- Deposits feel like a transfer to a vault. The user interface presents a balance the way a wallet presents cash: something you own, in a box, with your name near it.
- Withdrawal speed is confused with custody. An operator that pays in ten minutes and one that pays in three days can have identical arrangements behind the balance - and one of them can have none.
4 false - the balance is not in your name, the regulator is not an insurer, a bank chargeback is a different route, a chain asset is not your entry
2 half true - a licence protects only through its condition, segregation protects against spending and not against shortage
1 true and against the player - bonus-derived funds are not customer money in the ordinary case
